Fantasy Baseball 2020: SP - Consistency Preview

Nick Young shares the most consistent Starting Pitchers of 2019 and his top pitchers for 2020.

After a thrilling 2019 season and off-season that saw high level pitchers such as Zach Greinke, Gerrit Cole and David Price all go to different teams. During the season there were 20 starting pitchers with over 800 fantasy points and Mike Minor was only 3.9 points away from joining the 800 club.

While having high scoring games for pitchers is always great, you also need to be aware of the how consistent they play. For example, Tyler Glasnow of the Rays was on fire during the start of the season but was out the rest of the year due to injury. He is my comeback player this year because of the potential he showed. To determine consistency, we used the following scoring system.

Going into this past season, I was all about Gerrit Cole, primarily because the Astro’s bullpen was stacked with him and Verlander and it just got better when they acquired Greinke. With the rest he needed Cole was able to attain his 83% consistency and still achieve a 2.50 ERA. I believe he will continue this level of consistency with the Yankees.

Notable Exception: Justin Verlander

TIER TWO

These guys are just a little below Elite, they will still bring you exponential points, but it could cost you consistency in the long run.

The main reason I don’t have Verlander In this tier is primarily because of the organizational changes the Astro’s will be going through and he is getting up there in age. Verlander is a great pitcher and he had a 2.58 ERA this year, but I am hesitant telling people to make him your pick in the first two rounds.

TIER THREE

This is where things get interesting, once you get below 54% consistency, you will need to shore up your fantasy teams with strength at the other positions or plug and play each week based off the schedule. They are purely roster fills and should only be used during good matchups or you have no one else.

Greinke is probably the biggest surprise with his low consistency because he still had a 2.93 ERA but he also allowed 21 homeruns in just 18 games this season. From there I included guys like Glasnow because we couldn’t see his full potential with the Rays last season because injury ruined his season and I wasn’t able to gauge him properly. I think he has what it takes to get into tier 2 but I will have to wait and see, on both of my fantasy baseball teams I kept him on my injury to hopefully activate him to my roster at some points.

Here’s a scatterplot showing the most consistent and inconsistent starting pitchers of 2019:

WRAP UP

With most pitchers, their scores don’t always show their consistency as seen with Greinke or Teheran. There are 10 really good starting pitchers that all teams should go after then from there it is a luck of the draw. There could be injuries or a poor matchup which leads to hesitation choosing a Pitcher to start.
