Fantasy Baseball 2020: SS - Consistency Preview

Aaron Pags shares the most consistent shortstops of 2019 and his rankings for 2020. Follow him @fantasytriage

Beginning as far back as the days of town Little League ball, shortstop has traditionally been manned by the team superstar. This was especially evident in the 1990s when the position was manned by then blossoming stars, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Nomar Garciapparra. The glory days. In many ways 2019 showed signs of a resurgence of young superstars set to inspire another generation of shortstops to be.

Of course it's one thing to flash stardom but another to provide the consistency we advise you to target on draft day. Using our scoring system, there were 6 shortstops that topped 600 fantasy points in 2019 and Francisco Lindor missed the 600 club by less than 7 points. Second base recorded 5 players over the 600 mark, with first and third base coming in at 8 and 7 club members respectively. Which for a position (SS) known to be dominated by skilled fielders is a surprising finding to be near the other more offensive minded groups.

Below I will sort through the position giving my 2020 rankings and highlight a standout, consistent player in each tier. Keep in mind our scoring system is as follows:

Tier One

These are the truly elite of the position. They produce at the highest level with the most consistency, making them your ideal choice for shortstop.

Flip a coin. If there was ever a hair that could never be split, it's here at the top SS ranking for 2020. Both Bregman and Story are mashers with elite scoring potential and top notch scoring consistency. You cannot go wrong with either. Heads or tails, you win.

Tier Two

Here you will find a group just barely below the elite. These gentleman will still provide high point totals perhaps at a slightly lower level of consistency.

Marcus Semien had his age 27 breakout one year later than most and no one seems to have noticed. Is it because he plays his home games in Oakland, too late in the evening for us East coasters? 33 homeruns and 123 runs scored are mega numbers at SS and I have faith they are no fluke. Lost in the big names and bright lights atop the position, I think he will again outperform most selected before him in 2020.

Tier Three

Do not panic just yet. Shortstop is exceedingly deep in 2020. Should you find yourself missing out on the above 6, this group will likely be your landing spot.

The biggest wild card in this tier is San Diego Padre, Manny Machado. 2019 was a down year by Machado's standards, clearing the wall 32 times. If that's down, I am here for the up. A late arrival to Spring Training last season and a new home team could be the culprits to this stars dim season. I for one believe in Manny's talents and will gladly roster him should the rest of my league not feel the same. His teammate, Fernando Tatis staying healthy in front of him in the order would only boost my confidence in a big year for Machado.

Tier Four

This level of shortstops is baked with boring but also a hint of "if it all goes right". There are certainly tempting skill sets if you dare to wait on draft day.

If all goes right for Toronto Blue Jay's youngster Bo Bichette, he will pick up right where he left off in 2019...tearing the cover off the ball! Striking out 1 out of every 4 ABs isn't ideal for a leadoff hitter, so we will wait to see if Bo can man the number 1 spot on the order all year long. His hit tool is legit but with just shy of 200 career at bats it's just a tiny bit too early for me to call him a certainty. Pitchers will have information now and make adjustments. It will be up to Bichette to make his own adjustments as needed.

Off the list

One player did catch my eye as he was a top 5 consistent shortstop in 2019. Why did I choose to leave this particular player off the rankings? With all the swirling circumstances of sign stealing, I had trouble believing in his short 14 weeks of play being "on the up". Perhaps with some time to separate from the scandal I will reconsider and add Carlos Correa to a tier. He likely belongs there.
