FANTASY FOOTBALL: 2020 Clutch Awards - WR

Bob Lung passes out the Consistency Awards to the wide receivers for 2020 Fantasy Football season! Where did your wide receivers end up? Follow Bob @bob_lung.

The Fantasy Football season of 2020 is in the books and there were many Clutch wide receivers and some, well, not so much. Therefore, in the heart of Awards season, it’s time to announce the 2020 Clutch Awards for the Wide Receivers!

WORST VALUE

This award goes to the wide receiver that had the highest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the worst combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making him the worst value at wide receiver in 2020.

And the winner is….

D.J. Moore

Moore came off a great sophomore season and was ranked in the Top 12 in most ADP rankings. However, Moore and Teddy Bridgewater just didn’t click in 2020 as Moore ended the year ranked 24th in total points and a putrid 53% consistency, which ranked him 40th overall! The Panthers have a Top 8 pick in the NFL draft and many are speculating they will pick a quarterback. Whether this helps or hurts Moore in 2021 will remain to be seen. For now, I’m going to wait to see what his ADP is before I decide to draft him.

BEST VALUE

This award goes to the wide receiver that had the lowest ADP at the beginning of the season and ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency. Thus, making the best value at wide receiver in 2020.

And the winner is….

Robby Anderson

There were a ton of potential candidates here but in the end it is very difficult to ignore the value earned from Anderson. His pre-season ADP was at WR60! He was signed by a team with D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel. There was no way, he could be Fantasy relevant, let alone consistent. However, at the end of the year, Anderson was ranked 20th in total points and had a 69% consistency rating, which ranked him 15th overall. As I mentioned above with D.J. Moore, the Panthers will probably get a new quarterback in 2021. So, it may make sense to leave that situation alone.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the rookie wide receiver that had ended the season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Justin Jefferson

Henry Ruggs, Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb and Jalon Reagor were all draft ahead of Justin Jefferson in the 2020 NFL Draft. Yet, none of these receivers exceeded the exclusive 60% consistency level, other than Jefferson. Jefferson ended the season ranked SEVENTH in total points and was 63% consistent, which ranked 23rd overall. He was even more consistent than Adam Thielen (his teammate). Jefferson’s last eight games, he earned seven clutch games for an 88% consistency. He will be certainly on my radar in 2021.

CLUTCH-LESS

This award goes to the wide receiver that ended the season with a high ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was lower than expected. Therefore, making him look more valuable (due to high points rank) than he was worth to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Tyler Lockett

While this award is normally won by our favorite “Fantasy Locust”, Amari Cooper, this year is a little different. Tyler Lockett was the epitome of Clutch-Less in 2020! He ended the year ranked EIGHTH in total points and was only FIVE Fantasy points behind teammate, DK Metcalf (who was ranked sixth). However, Lockett’s consistency was a dreadful 50% overall, which ranked him 42nd overall. Certainly keep this in mind in 2021 as your looking at your rankings, ADP’s, etc. Lockett’s xConsistency ranks him 32nd overall. I’d feel good about draft him as my WR3 in most drafts. The problem is he’ll probably be drafted as a WR1 or WR2.

CLUTCH-MORE

This award goes to the wide receiver that ended the season with a low ranking in total Fantasy Points, but his consistency was higher than expected. Therefore, making him look less valuable (due to high points rank) to his Fantasy teams, when he was actually worth MORE!

And the winner is….

Terry McLaurin

Some wide receivers are very rare in that it doesn’t matter who their quarterback is, they are always consistently productive. DeAndre Hopkins was that way in Houston BEFORE Deshaun Watson. The most recent receiver with this skill is Terry McLaurin. Regardless of what garbage the Washington Football Team puts out there, McLaurin performs. Last year, with at least three different quarterbacks, McLaurin ended the year ranked only 19th in total points, but his 80% consistency ranked him SIXTH overall. Hopefully, most will only look at his 19th ranking in total points and draft accordingly. However, now you know how much more valuable he is to your Fantasy teams.

CLUTCH COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR

This award goes to the wide receiver that ended the 2019 season with a poor ranking in total Fantasy Points and consistency. However, in 2020, he had the greatest improvement in both categories making him very valuable to his Fantasy teams.

And the winner is….

Brandin Cooks

This one had a ton of possible winners. From Stefon Diggs to Corey Davis to Calvin Ridley to the ultimate winner, Brandin Cooks. Cooks made the biggest jump from 2019 to 2020 in overall rank. Cooks finished the 2019 season ranked 61st in total points when he played for the Rams and he had a putrid 28% consistency rating. He moved to Houston in the off-season and ended 2020 ranked 17th in total points and more importantly had a 73% consistency rating, which ranked 13th overall. Deshaun Watson should be moving on, so we’ll have to wait and see who will be the Texans quarterback in 2021. Either way, I feel that Cooks will be a solid value.

CLUTCH MVP

This award goes to the wide receiver that ended the 2020 season with the best combination of total Fantasy Points and consistency.

And the winner is….

Davante Adams

Adams shared this title with DeAndre Hopkins a couple of years ago, but he was the outright winner in 2020. Adams bounced with the resurgence of Aaron Rodgers in 2020 and took the #1 spot in both total points AND consistency with a 93% rating. Adams should be the #1 overall wide receiver in 2021 as Rodgers will continue to play with a chip on his shoulder and Adams will be his favorite target on every play.
