Each week, we bring you the results of the George Blanda Division in the King’s Classic Expert League! Follow the league on Twitter @KingsClassicFF

In the summer of 1963 the Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League held what would be the first ever fantasy football draft.  Shortly thereafter, the Kings X bar opened in Oakland and introduced fantasy football to its patrons.  Since the opening of the Kings X in 1968, fantasy football has snowballed into the multi-billion dollar industry that has spawned a radio network, network time devoted to fantasy on all the major sports networks, numerous websites, podcasts and even a clothing line.  In 2018, the Inaugural King’s Classic took place at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.  The idea was a dual effort of Canton native and creator Big Guy Fantasy Sports, Bob Lung, and Brad Evans of Yahoo Sports.  Their vision was for 24 of the best and brightest minds in fantasy football to assemble at the Hall of Fame in two divisions, for two drafts.  The divisions were named for the first two picks in the inaugural GOPPPL draft, first overall pick George Blanda, who was followed by the legendary Jim Brown.  Each player participated in both a snake and auction draft, with half of the $100 entry fee going to charity.

We added four more teams in Year 2 and had our drafts on Saturday, Aug 17. Once again with Sirius Fantasy Sports Radio in attendance!

Each week, we will recap the happenings in both divisions.  You can also follow along with each league by clicking the links below.  It’s anyone’s guess, but one thing is certain, it’s going to be a wild ride!

Snake Division

https://fantasy.espn.com/football/league?leagueId=38503290

Week 2’s closest matchup of the snake division goes to the Fantrax HQ squad and the Tozzi Brothers, with Fantrax narrowly escaping with a 118.5 to 111.6 win.  Ron Rigney’s Fantrax team was led by the Ravens’ connection of Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews combining for 55 points.  Tyler Lockett chipped in 17.9 to seal the deal.  The Tozzi Brothers got 22 point weeks from both Tyler Boyd and Saquon Barkley, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.

Auction Division

In the auction division week 2’s tightest matchup was between Fantrax HQ and Doug Orth from FF Today with the Fantrax squad edging Team Orth 121.1 to 110.4.  Fantrax was led by the wide receiver duo of Emmanuel Sanders and Tyler Boyd, who combined for 50 points.  Kerryon Johnson added 16 in the win.  Team Orth was also led by a wideout duo with Chris Godwin and Davante Adams combining for 43.  Todd Gurley chipped in 15, but it wasn’t enough for the victory.

We head into Championship week with the Quest for the Gold T-Shirt!

The Blanda Division has some great matchups!  Best of luck to everyone!

Snake

Darren Armani’s Fantasy Mojo team heads into title week as the number one seed, and is favored by about 15 points this week.  He takes on Doug Orth’s second seeded FF Today team who finished the regular season with a 9-4 mark.  Armani’s team will count on rookie Josh Allen at QB this week in a tough road start against the Patriots.  With skill players like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Adam Thielen and Christian McCaffrey, it’s easy to see why is playing for the crown.  Orth’s team sports some firepower as well with Andrew Luck at QB and breakout wide receiver Davante Adams leading the way.  The FF Today team is going to need tight end Vance McDonald to visit the end zone as well as big rushing days from Chris Carson at Kansas City and Leonard Fournette at Miami, which are both favorable matchups.

Auction

The auction features a chalk matchup as well with the number one seeded SiriusXM team of Brandon Funston facing Mike Woellert’s second seeded 4 for 4 Fantasy team.  The SiriusXM team is led at QB by Patrick Mahomes, who figures to be a popular name among teams playing for titles this weekend.  WR is the strength of the team with Julio Jones and Mike Evans leading the way.  The RB spot will be the key however, as Alvin Kamara will need to show up with a big game, along with waiver wire gem Phillip Lindsay.  It wouldn’t hurt to see Anthony Firkser visit the end zone either.  Woellert will need a big game from Antonio Brown in a favorable matchup against the Saints on the road.  He will also need first round David Johnson to show up, instead of the guy we have seen most of the year.  Marlon Mack and James White round out an impressive pairing of flex RB’s.  The impressive Bears DEF will figure to come up big against a Niners team and should give Woellert’s team solid production yet again.

We come to the close of the King's Classic Inaugural season!

Thank you again to all of the participants and congrats to all of the winners!

Auction

It was a matchup of the top two seeds for the crown in the George Blanda auction division as Brandon Funston of SiriusXM downed Mike Woellert’s 4 for 4 Fantasy squad 114.95 – 94.95.  Funston was led by Patrick Mahomes, who cost $1 in the auction (yes, you read correctly) as he continued his 2018 tear right into the fantasy playoffs.  The SiriusXM team also benefitted from big weeks out of Mike Evans and Alvin Kamara, as they both exceeded weekly projected outputs.  Woellert was let down by Patriots wide out Chris Hogan as he posted a goose egg.  The 4 for 4 team sported three players that scored below five points, but did benefit from huge day from Antonio Brown as he posted 37.5 fantasy points in the matchup.  Congrats on great regular seasons from both teams and a special salute to Brandon Funston for winning the inaugural King’s Classic George Blanda auction!

Snake

The snake division also saw the top two seeds square off as the Fantasy Mojo team of Darren Armani took down the FF Today squad of Doug Orth 180.45 – 116.45.  Team Mojo sported seven players that exceeded weekly projections, including Nick Foles, Christian McCaffrey, and Jamaal Williams, who all scored at least 23 points.  Orth’s team didn’t experience any huge letdowns on the day, but Tarik Cohen finishing with 2.4 points didn’t help the cause.  Andrew Luck and Chris Carson did their best to bring the crown home to FF Today, but it wasn’t enough.  Hats off to both teams and congratulations to Darren Armani for winning the 2018 King’s Classic George Blanda snake championship!

Snake

With victories in Week 14 both Colby Conway and Mike Tagliere advanced to this week’s auction semifinals.  Conway will face off against second seeded Doug Orth in Week 15, while Tagliere takes on Darren Armani, who earned the top seed with an 11-2 record.  Conway will rely on his wideout heavy approach to come through yet again but will also need Jared Goff to play well against Philly. Orth is getting Leonard Fornette back at the right time but will also need the Bears defense to keep rolling with big production against the Packers.  In the other matchup, Armani will rely on breakout wideouts JuJu Smith-Schuster and Adam Thielen to continue to post big numbers, while Tagliere will need Amari Cooper to keep posting big numbers.  The matchup could come down to how well Big Ben plays against the Pats at home as he will start for Tagliere’s team.

Auction

The first round of the playoffs saw no upsets, so the top four seeds remain.  Three seed Gary Davenport will take on the second seeded Mike Woellert while top seed Brandon Funston will take on Mike Tagliere, the fourth seed. Davenport’s team will need big games from Tom Brady as well as rookie stud Zeke Elliott, while Woellert’s team is going to need all four running backs to chip in around Antonio Brown who is in for a big day against New England.  In the other matchup, Mahomes, Lindsay and Julio Jones lead the way for Funston’s team with the biggest question mark being Trey Burton at tight end.  Tagliere’s team is led by Todd Gurley (as are most playoff teams) but he has also benefitted from Amari Cooper’s recent resurgence, as well as Gus Edwards being a solid waiver wire find.
